Early this year, TREE Foundation Executive Director Meg Lowman was named to the board of Land Empowerment Animals People (LEAP) Spiral, an organization dedicated to conservation and restoration of the forests and residing wildlife of Sabah, a region of the Malaysian Borneo. Since its establishment in 2004, LEAP has successfully established partnerships between small-scale community organizations and multinational organizations in order to increase transparency and foster support of local initiatives dedicated to preserving the valuable Bornean rainforest. As part of this work, LEAP established a biobank to restore tens of thousands of hectares of Orangutan habitat and successfully shut down construction of a new coal-fired power plant — Sabah’s first.
