Fifth graders inspired by Dr. Lowman’s adventures and rainforest research

Ann Mahon, 5th grade Language Arts teacher at Fonda-Fultonville Central School, writes the following:

Fifth graders in Mrs. Mahon’s and Mrs. Berberich’s Language Arts classes at Fonda-Fultonville Central School in upstate New York have been on a journey to the canopy of the rainforest. Thanks to the amazing book, The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn Lasky, students were able to travel with nationally renowned scientist Dr. Meg Lowman to read, write, and research the rainforest.

As part of the New York Sate Common Core Curriculum, students experienced the rainforest through sharing Meg’s story, reading scientific field journals, articles, and narratives, and viewing documentary videos. Students even took their experience a step further by independently researching their own rainforest creatures and then create informational posters which were presented to everyone in class. The 5th graders especially enjoyed learning about Dr. Lowman’s adventures and research and found her passion and determination to be inspiring and encouraging! Thank you, Dr. Lowman!
