During the 1990s, the Jason Project reached millions of middle-school kids with virtual expeditions around the world. This innovative program utilized satellite technology and miles of cables to connect me from the rain forest canopy to the “production studio” in the jungle. Despite the enormous technical details required twenty years ago to pull this off, Jason remains an amazing and pioneering success to inspire kids about science. I still hear from students who watched me in the jungle canopies on Jason programs, and now are pursuing science in graduate school! It was an honor and privilege to work with the Jason teams, and especially with Bob Ballard, who founded Jason and was a great role model for me to learn about science communication!
This FUN video is a compilation of Jason bloopers from the Jason V broadcasts in Blue Creek, Belize. I “starred” in 55 programs on that canopy platform, with Bob hosting, and the stories continue to make us all laugh. Enjoy! And sending a big hug to all those Jason team mates who made that extraordinary program reach so many young people.
